What does it mean to be a test knitter (or crocheter)?

After a pattern designer knits/crochets a sample and the pattern has been tech-edited, test knitters make their own samples from the tech-edited pattern to look for any gaps in the instructions, math errors, or major issues with fit.

Thanks to test knitting, I can be confident that the patterns I’m publishing are clear, complete, and correct. You can be confident that the final projects will be a good fit for you by seeing the pattern on a sampling of different bodies.

how long does a test knit take?

My tests run a minimum of 12 weeks for garments and 8-10 weeks for accessories, depending on the size and complexity.

Where do I apply to be a tester?

If you’re interested in testing, head to this link to fill out a tester application. The folks on this list and the newsletter get first dibs on test calls. Then, I’ll open up the test call on Instagram to fill any sizing gaps. Finally, I’ll post on Yarnpond if certain sizes still need to be filled.

what does the testing process look like?

1. The test call is launched

2. Test knitters apply and indicate their preferred size for testing (sometimes, this can change during the testing process, and that’s okay!)

3. Testers are accepted, and the test begins. Testers order their yarn and receive the tech-edited pattern. Testers are added to a Slack Channel where they can message me for 1:1 support, report pattern errors, and chat with other testers. We have a bit of fun in here, too!

4. I have 3 formal check-in points, one every 4 weeks, to get a progress report on your test knit. If you’re not able to make the deadline, this is a great opportunity to tell me. If you can’t meet the deadline, there are no hard feelings. Life happens, and you’re not my employee!! You’ll get to stay in the Slack Channel and share your progress with the group and I can share your WIPs on social during launch week. It’s still a win-win.

5. Once the test is over, I’ll ask you to submit a feedback form. I’ll ask you about your yarn choice & yardage needs, feedback about the pattern instructions, and upload any photos that I can use to market the pattern.

6. As a thank you for testing, I’ll gift you another pattern of your choosing.

7. The test is over, and we launch the pattern! Your samples will be showcased in my newsletter, on Instagram, and on pattern pages in Ravelry.

What skills do I need to test for you in knitting/crocheting?

While I’m happy to work with beginners (we were all new to this at one point!), you should have a basic understanding of knit/crochet stitches, garment construction, seaming, swatching, and blocking. You’ll also need to be able to work from a charted or written stitch pattern. Bonus points for experience with lace & cable stitches, as those feature heavily in my design aesthetic.

will I get paid?

Unfortunately, I can’t pay my testers at this point in my business. All testers are to get the final released version of the pattern and another pattern from KJD of their choosing ($20 value). Sometimes, I’m able to offer yarn support or discounts on yarns.

How do you create an inclusive space for bodies in larger sizes?

My newest garment designs are size-inclusive (28” to 72” actual chest), and my older patterns are slowly being updated to match. If you’re ever in doubt about whether the pattern will fit, head to the Pattern Page in the Shop to download the schematic and size chart before buying it.

Can I use budget-friendly yarns?

1000% yes! I want you to work with the yarn that is in your budget. All yarns are welcome here! I highly recommend Knit Picks/We Crochet. They have some incredible yarns at a fair price point. And if you’re not sure what yarns would make good substitutes, you can contact me at any time and I’ll be happy to provide some advice.

Can I join more than one test at a time?

Yes, but I trust you to be an adult and manage your time. If you think you can meet both deadlines within reason, I’m happy to have you. But if you think you’ll miss one (or both) deadline, please be mindful and leave that spot open for someone else.

Will you use my images online?

I will only use images that you have expressly given me permission to use or the photos that are uploaded to the feedback form.

Do you allow pattern modifications?

That depends on the type of modification. I happily accept changes to lengths or yarn choices to suit your style and body. But if the modification drastically changes the feel of the pattern (e.g., cardigan vs. pullover), I’ll have to say no. When in doubt, your best bet is to either contact me ahead of applying with your proposed mod or message me in the Slack Channel.

I can often accommodate mod requests, but it’s easier to evaluate them on a case-by-case basis.
